2017 Italy Inter-railing

I was so excited for our big summer holiday to ITALY!! The food, wine, sight seeing and beautiful weather really made this a special trip!

Beautiful viewpoint over Naples

But as usual we try to fit as much as we can and on a tight budget. Below are the dates we flew and traveled by train in July 2017:

  • Naples
  • Pompeii
  • Rome
  • Florence
  • Piza
  • Venice
  • Milan

We then went from Milan and flew to Cairo (Egypt is in another blog post)

So altogether it was 12 nights/13 days

We bought a 6 day Inter Rail ticket 215.5€ premium ticket. We selected premium as the High Speed Trains you have to book your seat in advance which incurs a reservation fee. So it was cheaper to select premium ticket than pay a reservation fee each time. We used the Train Italia app to research our train times and book our seats!

So starting from the beginning I will list what we did in each city as a guideline to what you can do!

Naples

  • Naples is so famous for its Pizza- The Best Pizza going is in ‘Gino Sorbillo’. We had to queue for an hour for amazing pizza for so cheap! Well worth it!
  • We did a Day trip to Pompeii- the train to pompeii is only €1.10. You must Book Pompeii tickets in advance http://www.ticketone.it/ €20.50 for 2 tickets online
  • Trip to the beautiful Amalfi Coast
  • Veiled Christ Capella Sansevero
  • Naples Underground - Guided Tour €10. This was very interesting to see these amazing tunnels built under the city!
Rome
  • Vatican Tour & Sistine Chapel - €30 for skip the queue ticket Having these tickets will allow you to walk past the long, long line and enter via the right-hand side of each entrance – where there may still be a line, but a much shorter one- unless you are an Art buff I would only listen to the guide for a short time and just leave to go straight to the Sistine chapel! Sistine Chapel - Closed on Sundays. St Peter’s Basilica- you see after you have been to the Sistine Chapel. Piety- is in St Peter’s Basilica. Visit the underground tombs of previous Popes.

  • Vatican- Tea with Pope- check if he is saying mass on the days you are visiting Rome!
  • Colosseum  & Palatine Hill. Book Ticket with http://tickitaly.com/ costs €28.50 if you’re an EU student under 25! And skip all the queues. Print “at home Tickets” for Colosseum and book underground tour- really worth it!
  • Palatine Hill/Roman Forum- you can use your ticket for the Colosseum to enter (or enter the next consecutive day)
  • TreviFountain/ Pantheon/ Spanish Steps

  • Piazza Navona
  • Galleria Borghese
  • Fountain of four rivers
  • Segway Tour of Rome AMAZING! €58.50
  • Campo dei Fiori (Market)

Florence

  • Statue of David the Great- wait till just before the museum closes- the queue disappears and you don't have to pay mad prices to skip the queue earlier in the day.

  • Day trip to Piza- the train brought us straight there, had our fun pics of the Leaning Tower then got the train straight back.
  • Dumo €8 Bell Tower €6
  • Stroll down Ponte Vecchio
  • Picnic at Giardino dells Rose
  • Have to eat these AMAZING sandwiches in All'antico Vinaio. They're famous for them and people are lined on the streets eating them. They are €5.
Venice
  • All Gondola Rides are €80. Don't even try haggle with the sailors. However we got a deal online for a 30 min ride in a Gondola and we were very happy with it!

  • The Secret Passageways
  • The Bridge of Sighs
  • Rialto Bridge
  • Piazza San Marco/ Doges Palace/ tore dell Ordogio
  • Climb Campanile

Milan
  • The Last Supper - Santa Maria. You need to book tickets in advance. We had to go through Tickitaly and paid much more than we should have since all the tickets were sold out. However we did get a walking tour of Milan with it which was enjoyable.

  • Milan Cathedral climb to top

  • Theatre alla Seala Opera
  • Shopping Centre is beautiful which is located beside the Cathedral.
  • In it there is a mosaic of a bull on the ground It is said that if you rotate your left foot on the bull 3 times you will become rich!
  • Eat Luini- this tasty pastry sandwich. Very cheap and everyone queues up for them!

  • San Siro Stadium- a day for the boys really! Paul enjoyed it!

And just for fun here is a Bucketlist of things you should do in Italy!!

Eat pasta pizza gelato

Ride scooter/Vespa

Lean on Piza

Make a wish at TF
See Mt Vesuvius
Say “Ciao”
Drink Wine/Expresso
