2018 New York

First trip to New York was amazing! What a way to spend a week with my favourite girls. We got a great deal with Aer Lingus and we couch surfed in my friend's brothers house for the few days. New York City is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

I've included a video I made using the Canon G7X mark ii

Every touristy thing you can do in New York we did our best to do them ALL! In this blog post I'll give a general run down of what we did, price, locations and general info.

1. Grand Central Station
It's one of the first tourist sites you will hit as you need to get the metro everywhere. It's just like the movies, so large and beautiful. It's located at the intersection of Park Avenue & 42nd Street, plenty of shops and restaurants also. We got a MetroCard ($5.50 for the card), but the amount of cash you need on the card Cards can be used by multiple people

2. Highline Walk
Pretty walk that brings you about New York. It was an old railway line that has been remade into a walkway. It ends in Chelsea so then we walked to TIMES SQUARE. It's so busy, buildings covered in screens and advertisements. We managed to also get glimpses of the Flat Iron Building and Madison Square Garden all by just walking about the city.

3. World Trade Center & 9/11 Memorial Museum
Obviously a must for first timers. I still remember the day we heard the news of the twin towers falling. We bought our tickets on the morning as it was a quiet time of the year. At ground 0 they have 2 huge water pools to represent the twin towers, all dotted with names of the people who died. There are white roses placed on names of people who's birthdays fall on that day. The museum is so well put together. When you walk in you have all the photographs of on lookers heads pointed towards the sky watching the devastation. We spent most of the morning here so allow plenty of time to view all parts of the museum.

4. Wall Street
Again a famous part of New York that has the striking bull that everyone wants pictures of.

5. Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
I am a fan of museums but I am not an art fanatic. I know the famous pieces so those are the one's I want to see. So anytime I plan to visit a museum I research what pieces I want to see first and go straight to them. Saves a lot of time looking at other art that I don't know anything about (sorry!) So I had my list for MoMA. We rocked up at about 4.30pm and because it was closing in an hour they gave us the ticket for half price (happy days!). Unfortunately some of the paintings I wanted to see were on loan and travelling over the world. However I got to lay my eyes on 'Starry Night' Van Gogh, Piet Mondiran 'Broadway Boogie Woogie' and the 'Golden Madonna'.

6. Brooklyn Bridge
We got a subway out to Brooklyn and the place was polluted with tourists. We got fabulous weather for it and enjoyed the sunshine walking across it. We stopped at 'Dumbo' for pictures also.

7. Ellis Island
We got a boat ride to Ellis Island which passes the Statue of Liberty (ticket $18.50). We didn't get off at the Statue as your pictures are much better from the boat as it's so tall and the queue to get back onto the boat was so long so we headed straight to Ellis Island to see the Emigration Museum. The first immigrant registered on Ellis Island was a 15 year old Irish girl called Annie Moore and there's a statue to commemorate her.

8. Central Park
Again we had a sunny day to rent bikes and cycle around Central Park for $20 for 3 hours. There's loads of things to see and stop off at. We managed to see the famous 'Friend's Fountain', John Lennon's Memorial and a lovely view of Trump Towers.

9. Rockefeller Center
We bought tickets to go to 'Top of the Rock' for $44 which is steep (and it was sunset time) but a must when you come to New York. We went at 6,30pm to catch sunset which was amazing! On one side of the Top you can see the whole of Central Park and the other side you see the Empire State Building.

10. Broadway
Of course we went to see and show and none other than 'The Lion King' I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The music and costumes are just fabulous! Bring me back to 1994! We paid $130 for the matinee show at 2pm. We had dinner after in 'Ellen's Stardust Diner' where the waiters sing and preform while you eat. Again we had to queue for a while before we got a table but again it was worth it.

11. Soho/Chinatown/Little Italy
I am a walker when it comes to sightseeing so I was determined to see all these areas in one go. We were hunting for famous wall murals in Soho, ate amazing pizza in Little Italy and saw the weird and wonderful shops and stalls in Chinatown. Even spotted a big group of Chinese tourists...in Chinatown?

12. Greenwich
Hunting continued for the Friends Apartment and Sarah Jessica Parker's home from 'Sex in the City'. There so many quirky places to eat, buy ice cream or cookie dough, sit, drink and enjoy the views in Greenwich.
