2018 Prague

Every January myself & my boyfriend head off for a 3 day/2 night getaway in Europe. This year we went to Prague! I love going in January as the cities still have that Christmassy feel with amazing Christmas markets and delicious food! Prague certainly reached that expectation!

We stayed in an AirBnB and we loved it! Perfect location to walk to all the key tourist spots

Below is a few of the sightseeing/activities we did in 3 days!
  1. The famous Charles Bridge spans the Vltava river and connects Old Prague Centre to Mala Strana. The bridge is protected by imposing three Gothic towers and is home to thirty Baroque-style statues and statuaries. The Bridge is flocked with tourists so try get their early in the morning for some nice pictures!
  2. Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world, and is perhaps the most renowned of all of the city’s many landmarks. There was lots of Christmas food stalls around the castle. There was a long queue for tickets to see inside the Castle so it would have been a good idea to buy our tickets in advance. We ended not going in as we were happy wandering around it and taking in its beautiful design.
  3. The Old Town Hall Tower, constructed in the early 1400’s, sits imposingly in the middle of the town square. The tower is among the highest in the Old Town and houses one of Prague’s most identifiable icons, the Astronomical Clock. Unfortunately they were refurbishing the tower and clock when we visited but we got to witness the hourly chime where 12 miniature apostles appear!
  4. Right across the river, via the Charles Bridge, behind a small church courtyard lies the John Lennon Wall. This dazzling vibrant homage to the famous poet, singer, and song writer is a living art project. Students during the 70s created this wall with the words from 'Imagine' as a protest against the Communist Government. Many times it has been painted over to get rid of it but alas it has just as quickly reappeared. A really lovely tribute to the Peace Advocate and you should get some lovely pictures here.
  5. At Charvátova 41/6 stands a giant, 39 ton heavy and 11 meters high statue of the head of Czech writer Franz Kafka. It consists of 42 moving layers of stainless steel that change the appearance of the statue several times a day. Very Cool
  6. We completed an Escape room called Mind Maze. It was very well organised and they took pictures for us and even got a cute report on how we did! We played Enigma and I would definitely recommend it for people who have played in escape rooms before.
  7. You have to eat Trdelnik when in Prague. Other wise known as 'Chimney Cake' it is a sugary pastry, originally coming from Romania. It is made from rolled dough that is wrapped around a stick, then grilled and topped with sugar. You can then fill it with anything you want. Ice cream, fruits or chocolate.
  8. One famous landmark you have to visit it the 'Child of Prague'. It's a statue of the Infant Child Jesus decorated in gold and jewels. There are many Irish traditions surrounding the child of Prague and my mother always had one in our house (and the head got broken off). It can be found in the Church of Our Lady Victorious.
